My name is Tom Moore and I am the pastor of Emsworth UP Church.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to
all of you. These last few months have been a great adventure in
the life of this congregation. Back in July they called me as their
new pastor. Upon my arrival, I found that this congregation is very
welcoming and loving. They accept people just the way they are as
I found out first hand. While we are one of the smaller congregations
in Pittsburgh Presbytery, God is doing some pretty amazing things
here among us.
This is a congregation that is eager to serve the Lord, and our
size is not a factor. Being a smaller congregation means we have
greater opportunities for fellowship and dedicated service. Everyone
has a chance to know everyone; to be involved with one another and
to bear with one another in times of joy and need.
We gather together around the Word of God in a great Victorian style
church; a wonderful atmosphere for fellowship and worship. As a congregation,
we are firm believers that God is active within the world and it
shows through our worship. My sermons are rooted in scripture and
bear witness to the work of God in, through, and as Jesus Christ;
both in our lives and within the world.
On Wednesday evenings we have a joint dinner and bible study. It
is a wonderful time to gather with friends and discern what mischief
God is up to in the world and in our lives. Generally, we study the
biblical passage that will be the focus of the sermon the following
Sunday. This is a great time to find out what people are struggling
with in their lives as well as what they struggle with in the Bible.
There are many opportunities within this congregation for service
and worship. But it is easy to miss us from the highway. One member
described this congregation as an “off the beaten track church
for off the beaten track people.” I truly believe there is
something to that. We aren’t “Any Church USA.” We’re
called by God as we are and where we are. Judgment and condemnation
are not what we do; rather we welcome all with arms wide open, knowing
that Jesus Christ is up to something in each one of our lives.
It is my sincerest hope that you would come and join us some day
for worship and fellowship. You can even drop by on Wednesday evening
for dinner and great conversations. I would love to sit down with
you and discover with you what God is up to in your journey of faith.
The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you! -Tom
Moore
