PASTOR'S WELCOME

Susan

Susan Maxwell Rothenberg is a native of Uniontown, Pa. who grew up in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was ordained as a deacon when she was in high school.  She met her husband, Mitchell Rothenberg, M.D. when she was a student at Chatham College in Pittsburgh.  After they married in 1981, Susan moved to Baltimore, Md. where she worked in advertising/marketing/public relations for nearly a dozen years while Mitchell completed his medical training at the University of Maryland.  Their daughter, Rachel, was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1992.  Susan and Mitchell will soon celebrate 30 years of marriage in June 2011!

Within a few years of returning to Pittsburgh, Susan entered Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (PTS).  Her son, David, was born in 2001.  Susan graduated from PTS in 2008, after having served internships at Children’s Hospital as a student chaplain, and Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Homewood as an urban ministry intern.  Additionally, Susan has served as an ordained elder for a number of years at her home church, Sixth Presbyterian Church in Squirrel Hill, where she has preached, taught children’s and adult Sunday school classes, conducted leadership workshops, served as chairperson for the Christian Education, Stewardship, Nominating and Worship session committees, led mission trips, and participated actively as a lay leader. Susan has been an active elder commissioner in Pittsburgh Presbytery, and has completed a number of continuing education courses in leadership, family systems, theology and church history at PTS since her graduation.

Susan and her family live in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Mitchell is an orthopedic surgeon at Mercy/UPMC, Rachel is a freshman at The College of Wooster, and David is a third grade student at St. Edmund’s Academy.  In her spare time, Susan enjoys cooking for friends and family, reading, and enjoying long walks in Pittsburgh’s great city parks! She is grateful to God that her first call to ordained ministry has led her to the welcoming community of faith at Emsworth United Presbyterian Church, and is looking forward to sharing in ministry with all of you.
